📜 Dev Log: Death May Come

Death May Come started as a simple idea:
A weird little world where survival is uncertain, the guardians are a little too friendly, and the price of sacred fruit might just be your life.
🎮 The Game
In Death May Come, you explore a strange, fleshy forest in search of the elusive Fleshpit Fruit—a powerful, mythical cure that could save you. Along the way, you’ll meet Gobbo and Furny, guardians of the fruit who aren’t quite what you’d expect. They’re charming, odd, and maybe just a little too interested in what you’re doing.
Expect narrative choices, a drag-and-drop mini-game, and an atmosphere that teeters between unsettling and strangely funny.
💻 The Process
This project was built in Ren’Py with original scripting, hand-crafted UI, and lots of love.
I wanted to experiment with:
-
Custom mini-games (Truffie collection!)
-
Drag-and-drop mechanics
-
A visual style that’s weird, soft, and slightly gross.
It’s also the first time I worked with Gimp in detail to create custom characters based off Caxt Nova's creatures!
🐾 Behind the Scenes
Also, I coded 90% of this game with a needy puppy on my lap.
Not optimal. Would not recommend. But we survived.
🔊 Sound & Music
Finding the right sound was tricky. The vibe I wanted was “soft body horror,” not full-on terror. I leaned into squishy sounds, ambient pulses, and subtle tension to keep the player a little on edge without overwhelming the story.
🕹️ Final Thoughts
This was a passion project for this jam, and I’m proud of how it all came together—even if death may come for us all eventually.
